El Monte Union Initiates Extended Dismissal of Students March 16-27
Acting on the recommendation from the Los Angeles County Office of Education, the El Monte Union High School District will be initiating an extended dismissal of students from March 16-27 to limit the spread of COVID-19.

We would like to emphasize that at this time, there are no known cases of COVID-19 in our District.

We know this decision will have a tremendous impact on our families, students and community.

The District will take every step possible to ensure that students continue to receive instructional services and access to our free and reduced-price meal plans. Below, see answers to specific questions about our continuity plan.

What is a dismissal?
During this time, students will remain home. Teachers and staff will report to their worksites on Monday, March 16, at their normally scheduled time. More information will be provided at that time.

Why a two-week dismissal?
This allows the district to slow transmission of the illness while giving us reasonable time to re-assess the situation going forward.

Will there be a spring break?
At this time, we expect to hold spring break as scheduled. Spring break will run from April 13-17, 2020.

Who does this affect?
All high school students, including after-school programs and other extended learning options. The Adult Education instructional program and operating hours will continue until further notice.

Does the District have an instructional plan in place?
The District has been working for several weeks on a comprehensive instructional plan to address school closures. Students and parents will receive direct communication about this plan, through school email, and the District website by March 17.

How will meals programs be provided?
The District will continue to provide free and reduced-price meals that families may pick up and take with them at the following locations from 9 a.m. to noon:

El Monte Union High School District
El Monte High School
Arroyo High School
South El Monte High School

El Monte City School District
Potrero School
Durfee School
Gidley School

Mountain View School District
Payne School
Kranz Intermediate
Twin Lakes School

Rosemead School District
Encinita School
Savannah School
Muscatel School

Valley Lindo School District
Shively School

Will state testing continue?
At this time, this is unknown. However, the federal government, which requires such testing, has said it will consider waivers for districts if dismissals impact testing windows.

What are the financial impacts?
These are not fully determined, but the state indicates it will continue funding during these closures. There may be additional impacts related to providing services during the extended dismissal period.

Will the Board of Education continue to meet?
Yes, the Board will continue to maintain its regular Board meeting schedule but may hold meetings via teleconference under new authorization allowed by the Governor via Executive Order N-25-20. Members of the public will have the opportunity to make public comment during the Board meetings.

How will I know if the dismissal is extended or other changes are being made?
The District will continue to provide regular updates via our District and school websites, as well as through our other regular channels of communication – phone calls, email and social media.

We would like to thank our staff, teachers and administrators for their dedication to our students and the community for its unwavering support.

We know this is an incredibly difficult time for everyone.

Our schools are the heart of our community, a second family to so many of us. But we know this is the right decision at this time.
